What is a split system and how does it work?

A split system is a 2-part unit consisting of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit, in summer the indoor unit takes the warm air from inside the room and replaces it with cold air, and in winter it runs in reverse and the heat pump warms the indoor unit while the fan pulls air from inside the room across the coil to heat the air up.
